Sex in the City has set the bar for women’s sexuality. In shows and in real life, all you usually see is men sleeping with multiple women and getting praised for it, but when a woman does it, she is called a whore or names of that same degree. In Sex in the City, the whole show is based around these four women who have relations with multiple men. Women like this show because it abolishes this double standard we have in our society. Both men and women need sexual release and we shouldn’t judge people when they do it and who they want to do it with, but that’s what our society does to one another. This should change. No matter what is on TV or how much our society changes in views, this double standard between women having sex with multiple partners being negative and men doing it as being positive, will never change. This show was made to make people look differently about this standard I think and show that women can do what men do an get praised by their friends for doing it as well.
The show Sex and the City brings the audiences attention to a standard our society has, that sex with multiple partners is only applauded amongst men. But I am not sure if there is a double standard, maybe from the perspective of a guy. That they applaud each other for having sex with multiple partners then turn around and call a girl/woman a whore for doing just that. But do woman applaud them? Do woman really want men with countless sexual partners or vise versa? I think there is a line amongst adults where no double standard exists, a line where being an adult and choosing to have sex is expectable and normal verses having countless sexual partners. I think the double standards for an adult comes more when that line has been crossed. This is how I feel about adults who make decisions to have sex, in high school for example I would have to agree that there is most certainly a double standard if a guy in high schools has sex with 1,2, 3 or more girls he is treated as “the man” if a girl has sex with as few as one guy, she is called a whore.
ReplyDeleteI agree I think its a little silly that guys can be praised for sleeping with many women and girls are initially called whores for sleeping with many men but I'm glad sex and the city had opened up societies eyes to say we aren't whores but I agree I don't think the double standard will ever go away.
